can’t stand - (견딜 수 없다) 부터 설명하자면

 

Can’t stand - 뜻 :   한) 참을 수 없다, 견딜 수 없다. 영) Cannot tolerate someone or something due to an aversion or a strong sense of disgust or dislike.

 

“Stand” 는 “서다” 나 “서 있다”라는 뜻을 지니고 있습니다. 그럼 “can’t stand”라고 한다면 “서있을 수 없다”가 되겠죠? 만약 내가 정말 싫어하는 사람이나 내가 정말 싫어하는 벌레인 바퀴벌레를 서있는 상태에서 바로 앞에서 마주보게끔 한다면? 그 대상이 너무 싫어 경멸하며 그 자리를 피하고 싶을 것입니다. 이렇게 참을 수 없어 앞에 서있는 것조차 싫은 바로 그런 느낌입니다.

Get into - 뜻:   한) 흥미를 갖다, 취미를 갖다. 영) to start enjoying something, or to become enthusiastic about it.

 

지난번에 배운 "caught up in something" (bring something up (꺼내다), caught up in (푹 빠지다) 뜻과 사용) 과 비슷하지만 조금 전 단계의 표현입니다. 이제 초기 단계인 것이죠. "Into something" 이라고 한다면 "뭔가에 흥미가 있다”라는 뜻이고 "get into something" 이라고 한다면 "흥미를 가지게 된다"라는 뜻을 갖고 있습니다. 이 다음에 푹 빠진다면 지난번에 배웠던 caught up in 이라는 표현을 쓸 수 있겠죠? 무언가라는 (취미나 음악 등등) 문을 열고 들어가는 것과 같은 뜻으로 상상하시면 될 것 같습니다.

뜻: 그녀는 정말이지 인터넷에 흥미를 갖고 있어.

 

I just can't get into that show—the acting is terrible.

뜻: 난 그 쇼에 흥미를 가질 수 없어. 연기가 최악이거든.
